Minister Carr issued the following statement on the occasion of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day. This statement was read at the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg Yom HaShoah ceremony at the Manitoba Legislative Building.
“Yom HaShoah recalls strong memories for me of growing up in our community of Winnipeg at a time when recollection of Holocaust atrocities were fresh and passed personally by survivors. I want to be with you on this important day. However, I must be in Ottawa and will join with the Jewish community here to reflect and remember the Jewish lives lost in World War II that must never be forgotten.
“While we in the Jewish community take time to remember the bravery and sacrifices made, we should also acknowledge and welcome the broader Canadian community joining us to recognize the many Jewish lives lost.
“Our remembrance rejects the evil that fueled an attempt to extinguish an entire people, and we all — Jewish and non-Jewish — bear a collective responsibility to ensure this genocide is never forgotten, and never repeated. Canada’s determination to never again allow such evil remains resolute.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I join with you in honouring the memories of the millions who lost their lives in the Holocaust and in paying tribute to the survivors amongst us.“
